Planetary Boundaries. Drawing the Red Lines

You are not able to manage what you are not able measure.

This well known managerial premise has been transferred to the concept of Planetary Sustainability in order to make the transformation possible.

 Warnings about the risks of global threads, particularly climate change are present in our lives, beating our conscious day after day. However most of of them are underestimated for a big portion of economic and political powers.

They defend themselves claiming “Bring me Data, bring me guidelines, bring me Limits!!”.

The Stern Report, a low suspected economist of being an anarchist environmentalist or so, even having been commissioned by the British Government, supposed a loud knock that strongly echoed in all those media agents usually deaf, and often very reluctant to “green” concern matters.

This Report made it clear that climate change was real and terrible consequence, and was agreed by 2500 scientists from around the world.

By contrast, and it is fair to underline, there are also scientists who believe that conclusions have been greatly exaggerated claiming that actual data we have does not support a significant temperature rise in the last fifteen years, considering the fact that we are in a warm period within regular cycles.

Nevertheless, this report has been considered as consensus science and a crucial stone to build a new future.

The Global Carbon Project, a major international program, said that past estimations had been extremely overwhelmed: between 2000 and 2010, increased CO2 in the atmosphere followed a trend faster even than the worst scenario. It is possible that the economic crisis will contribute to reduce this rate of increase, although many experts doubt that .

Growing fears, moreover appear from nature effects. Two examples: the reduction of Arctic Ice in summer reduces the ground surface and increases the uptake of solar radiation, increasing the temperature. At the same time, melting permafrost at high latitudes could release huge quantities of methane, a greenhouse gas more twenty times more potent than CO2.

So…
What are the limits that should not pass to avoid disaster and self-accelerating process?

This question has been recently formulated by a group of twenty leading scientists, led by Johan Rockström, University of Stockholm. Their proposals have been called “Planetary Boundaries”.

They have opened an important debate. The idea that moves them is that Human Influence has reached such proportions that can not be excluded out of global change anymore.

To avoid this going beyond, the report suggests providing some indicators to measure where the Red Line should not be ever overcome.

They detected nine boundaries and seven of them put figures to the thresholds that should be respected. These seven are related to:

–         Concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere

–         Ocean acidification

–         Stratospheric ozone concentration

–         Nitrogen fixation and

–         Discharge of phosphorus to the sea

–         Drinking Water Consumption

–         The proportion of cultivated land, and loss of biodiversity.

More difficult to measure:

–         The aerosol loading

–         Chemical pollution.

These authors believe that we have already violated three of these thresholds (CO2, biodiversity loss, nitrogen) and that all these limits are interdependent, so that one may exceed drag to move others as well.

Therefore intend to work on this new concept of planetary boundaries to define the security framework for human societies may not only be a  Map for Survive but a Guideline to Political Powers responding to its continuous claim of establishing Measures to establishing Clear Objectives.

 Now they have the Data they claimed.

Now the question is.. Is it going to change anything in their Management Style?

CROSSTHINKING – A TOOL TO REDUCE ORGANIZATIONAL STRESS

Organizations are complex systems, as organic bodies, built upon interrelated functions or organs.

Successful performance depends on the degree these functions work in better harmony.

Plenty Coordination is so, essential, but unfortunately, more usual than desired, Organizations fail in this goal, cause of invisible barriers keeping functional departments as separate, isolated, units.

Processes in the Organization do not mean an unidirectional delivery of inputs to be transformed into outputs. Communication among mid-management, demands to be bidirectional embeded into a well-known corporative strategy. More than ever, common goals require to be perfectly understood for every manager in the Company.

When problems rise up, always the guilty is another.

Nevertheless, experience shows that rarely managers are unskilled to properly comply with their tasks, but usually they struggle to communication efficiently and suffer a lack of Common North Vision.

Cross-Thinking brings an effective Organizational Tool that seeks to improve Global Company Performance through the Coordination´s optimization between departments, by analyzing the contents and flows of information, holding relaxed individual conversations with each manager or key employee, and so that, identifying these Communication Failures and bottlenecks.

Establishing objectives by functional area is a risky and uneasy task. They eventually bring conflicts between departments, due to the fact that oftenly, they become opposite by nature. For instance diversity in the product range brings an opportunity for market segmentation and innovation, attracting different customer profiles, and so sales volume, but pushes down the productivity rates in the factory at the same time incrementing product costing. The balance doesn´t work out, simply because it never exists. What determines how we have to perform should only be defined by our Strategy, our corporative purposes at any time.

What do we want to be? how do we want to differentiate? which challenges and risks do we face? how are we performing into our competive environment? what should we improve? what to boost? Once we respond to these questions , we must establish priorities, communicate properly gathering all efforts in the the same direction. Stop stretching the rope from each end. Otherwise we will break down the toy.

Understanding this point to avoid frustration, defining objectives under this premise. Broadening departmental visión.

Crossthing, through the introspection of an external expert becomes the piece required to reduce tension and facilitate cooperation and team building between managers and functions.

That´s the goal of Crossthinking. Improve Processes Alingment, Communication and Organizational Energy by reducing stress. The Organizational Massage.

Who is afraid of Temporality?

Whenever someone pronounces the word “Temporality” associated to employment is to reproach.
As if It was the  enemy, Temporality is treated as something to beat, to remove from the earth.

Usually revealed by politicians, they use this formula as a criterion for assessing the bad quality of employment in a country.

 However, we should remember that countries with higher rates of Temporality + Part-Time employment are Denmark, Netherlands, Sweeden and Finland in that order.  Countries with productivity problems? Not at all, by contrast they are leaders in that aspect.
Politicians and Analysts show their ignorance when they use this parameter as instability scale.

It remains unnatural to resist a modern trend of work, both regarding firms managing by projects and employees who learn to take care of themselves through continuous training and information to maintain its attractiveness to companies.

Companies are not mothers who take care of their children for the entire life. That’s part of the past. The turnover is increasing day after day, nobody can stop it. Some research claims that the average of different jobs held in a 38 years old professional  will be 14 in just 5 years.

 Moreover, this rotation is crucial for the enrichment of professionals experience as well as the flexibility companies require to improve their productivity and competitiveness in markets that do not forgive rigid, slow and inefficient organizational structures.

Are we ready to leverage temporality or  will we  keep complaining about this “terrible unfairness”?

GREEN ENERGY. WASTE OR SURVIVAL?

Recently in Spain we have seen how our Household Electricity Bill has been upgraded up to 10% by means of Government Aim adjustment. Although there would be different causes which could be tied up to this decision, the majority of critical voices has focused their passional complaints in the Government Support to Green Energy Companies especially in the field of solar and wind energy. These voices argue that investment in this field has been demonstrated to be a total waste of money based on a ridiculous Sustainability Policy that leads to a popular damage.

According to Official Statistics the daily average consumption in Spanish Households is 9,0 Kwh which means 1,35€ expenditure. It represents 40€ monthly spent by each Spanish Home. So that a 10% increment will mean 4€ monthly spent as average.

On the other hand, a car that spends 36.000km annually, so that 3.000 kms per month will mean a monthly expenditure of 300 € (considering 8l/100km and current fuel price of 1,25€/l)

If we consider that in 2010 the average of cars per family reaches to 1.5, we will conclude that the average consumption in Fuel will reach 450€ monthly.

Thus, the household expenditure in fuel is up to 10 times higher the expenditure in Electricity.

At the same time we are suffering a new increment on price petrol where nobody knows where the ending peak will be.

A year ago, in February 2010 the price of fuel was 99.36 cents/l . Two years ago the same parameter remained at  86.63 cents/l.  If we make some steps back we find that the price at February 2004 was 68,49 cents/l. Today the price we find each time we want to feed our automobile is 125, 75 cents/l.

This data means that the price of fuel at gas petrol incremented out of 26% last year, 45% in last two years and It has been practically duplicated in 7 years!! 

 Therefore, the monthly household expenditure in fuel for automobiles means an increment of up to 100€ in last year, close to 150€ in two years and 200€ in last 7 years!!  

At the same time the cost of drilling and extracting petrol grows day by day. The zones of easy extraction are amortized and the new emerging zones of Russia, Brazil and Poles demand 100 dollars cost per liter just on drilling and extracting activities. So, how can we expect the petrol bill will grow in a near future as petrol become scarcer?

Te Bet of Obama Administration for Green Energy is undisputed even getting important agreements with Spanish Renewable Companies like Abengoa or Iberdrola among others…Likewise, the American President is also strongly criticized by the Republicans to follow up this Energy Strategy.

Accordingly, we go on hearing from some sources of opinion that the investment in green technology is a stupid and useless waste of money, claiming to stop Sustainable policies as soon as possible.

Worldwide Engineering Challenges

Certainly today we may add some more.  Some examples we suggest:

  • Feasibility of Electric Energy in Automotive. Basically Charging Time.
  • Nuclear Waste Management.

TELEFONICARREFOUR I

Wikipedia dice que la Innovación es la aplicación de nuevas ideas, conceptos, productos, servicios y prácticas, con la intención de ser útiles para el incremento de la productividad. Y añade que un elemento esencial de la innovación es su aplicación exitosa de forma comercial. Esas nuevas ideas no tienen por qué ser grandes creaciones o descubrimientos como..yo qué sé, Google, que nos mueve a buscar como locos aumentando nuestra productividad… Pueden ser simples transferencias. Algo que se hace en un subproceso o en un subsector puede tener una aplicación en otros y consolidarse como innovación. Así las prácticas de economía de gasto y búsqueda de valor se constituyen en conceptos lean que trascienden las barreras de los procesos industriales siendo la base de la innovación en procesos de todo tipo de sectores y a lo largo de los modelos de valor.

La semana pasada abríamos un ciclo, en nuestro Club de Operaciones del IE, dedicado a la innovación, con la interesantísima intervención de José Vallés que nos presentaba la nueva propuesta de servicios y aplicaciones del grupo Telefónica y que bajo mi punto de vista aúna las propuestas de valor de dos modelos; el de Apple que con sus Apps les permite vender muchos más terminales con la promesa de acceder a un universo de nuevos servicios en un entorno ecosistémico movido por conceptos de open innovation y por otro lado el de los retailers de consumo como Carrefour que brindan a productores y clientes un espacio de consumo que les reporta beneficios por el reparto con los productores y la gestión del fondo de maniobra. Hace ya tiempo que las telcos son conscientes de que su evolución depende de la provisión de servicios a sus clientes o en su defecto de la comoditización hacia modelos de red más básicos como el suministro de gas o de agua. El punto era ¿cómo diseñar un modelo sostenible y de realimentación positiva? En retail consumo hemos visto que la evolución del mercado viene de pequeños comerciantes que crecen bajo sus marcas, la difusión de las marcas bien por la publicidad, bien por poderse expandir a otros mercados las hacen deseables y su concentración en superficies que se adaptan a las tendencias en consumo atraen patrones de tráfico que proporcionan poder a los retailers. Estos, ven la posibilidad de competir bajo marcas blancas, creadas desde nuevos ecosistemas, con los productores con los que actualmente compiten en los lineales… En los servicios de las telcos pienso que hay una diferencia en el modelo ya que antes simplemente no existían, salvo los más básicos, con lo que se ha tratado de generarlos desde dentro con mucho esfuerzo y poco éxito. Ahí es donde entran los conceptos de open innovation, la posibilidad de abrir las plataformas a infinitos agentes de innovación, en este caso desarrolladores que toman ideas propias o demandas de nichos generan esa red de proveedores de productos inicialmente básicos que buscarán proporcionar valor a una red de varios cientos de millones de usuarios…

CANCUN SUMMIT SUCCESS. RETURN TO THE ROADMAP.

The Mexican Administration efforts to seek global agreements within the last climate summit held this week in Cancun, has received the support and recognition from all of the International Community and especially, congratulations have been aimed to country President Manuel Calderón and to  Foreign Minister Patricia Espinosa, true leader of the Mexican summit.
Considering the disappointment infused after the Copenhagen Summit (read COPENHAGEN. FORWARD OR BACKWARDS?: Http://operations.blogs.ie.edu/2009/12/copenhage-forward-or-backward.html) held 1 year, which will be remembered for the lack of specific agreements and the limited multilateralism, the Cancun summit has supposed a return to serious commitment with environment and to a global consensus with the exception of Bolivia, clearly underestimated in its proposals, has been plenty and satisfactory by the rich countries, poor and emerging countries.
It has been recovered in Cancun the accuracy for establishing demand emissions targets by 2015, that although It will force to extend the Kyoto Protocol targets, brings a new roadmap with a North well defined and shared, something that seemed lost or blurred in recent summits.
Remains for the 2011 Durban summit confirmed as “binding” and not only “voluntary” agreements arrived in Cancun. So that everything can fall down or build up. It would mean the first foray in the U.S. and China, primarily responsible for CO2 emissions over 50% of global emissions in a firm commitment to minimize the impact of toxic gaseous in the continuous increasing in global temperature.
Particularly concerned by this fact were countries with large coast populations or core demographic sea island, which checked with vestments as water “eats their land with each passing day.”

Therefore, Obama won this time, not only including specific commitments in the text by the U.S. but also persuading China as a fellow traveler in achieving these objectives. Something strongly relevant taking into account the image of bilateralism of both countries offered in Copenhagen. Something that made European Union along with the rest of the world to feel unimportant, polluting that Summit Environment. In this case Obama succeeded in obtaining Chinese Government Commitment.

Another important step has been made in the sense Cancun has confirmed the creation of an International Fund Green, aimed at contributing to the emerging countries taking measures to prevent progressive growth of their emissions as well as aid to Amazon Basin countries to reduce the massive felling of trees leading to deforestation. This pray, demanded by Brazil for a long, was finally accomplished in Cancun.

So that, hope and optimism come back in Cancun. Time will tell us if It meant a real change in Governments Attitude or just a vague cleaning operation.

MOVING PEOPLE. BALANCING THE WORLD.

According to a research study made on U.S. multinational companies operating in Spai, they were required to show their consideration about Spanish workers performance. The result is pretty optimistic and they generally approve, with high mark, regarding the perception those companies have on the average European employee.

Stressing among his qualities, relational and social values, that mainly are, Customer Care, Commitment to the Organization and Teamwork. However, Spanish professionals strongly suspend onto abroad opening initiatives, highlighting, our difficulty even today to communicate in English as well as a clearly poor willingness to geographical mobility.
It seems, by a general analysis of the global economic situation, the Global System requires a balancing of professional resources. Excess productive areas, clearly identified in Europe, USA and Japan should implement opening policies that foster the movement of workers, avoiding the dangerous temptations of protectionism, airtight refuge in calling for an agonizing retro-feedback, the food for a slow death.
There are 20 countries in the last decade that have doubled or tripled their GDP from the beginning of century XXI. Ten from Africa, with Equatorial Guinea at the head, former Spanish colony whose GDP has multiplied by 5, the rest are located in the Middle East and North Asia, including special influence of China (rank 6) and India (rank 20).
Among the 100 countries that have increased their economy, there barely are European countries, with the exceptions of Russia (post 59, an increase of 60% of GDP) and countries heirs of communist regimes of the twentieth century, both former Soviet republics as South East European nations. The rest of the group is formed by nations from the same mentioned areas (Africa, Southeast Asia and Middle East) in addition to major Latin American countries like Argentina (79), Colombia (85) and Chile (99) all in the surroundings 50% of GDP growth. Brazil was ranked 104 with an increase of 40% of GDP, really impressive given the size of its economy.

Ford Motor Company founded Ford One Program in 2009. The principal purpose of  One Ford is the understanding of the Company as a real Global Entity, a unique family regardless function place or culture of their members.

The finality is working as a solid unity taking advantages of synergies and cooperation between inner departments as well as perfect and accurate suppliers integration wherever it is required.

Ford sees  the present automotive industry as at the intersection of three critical global issues: the economy, energy and the environment.

There are concerns about competitiveness and employment, the availability and affordability of fuel, and the impact of CO2 emissions. In response to these concerns, for the first time in a century, some of the most fundamental and enduring elements of the automobile are being radically transformed by new technologies.

The key to this transformation, and to success in automotive business, is continuous improvement practises and ongoing innovation.

Taking full advantage of a bigger global scale and talent to build products customers want and Value is already paying off for the Company in markets around the world. And within the next

four years, all Ford vehicles competing in global product segments will be common in North America, Europe, South America and Asia Pacific Africa. These two latter areas where the company has raised in sales, especially in Asia Pacific  at rates exceeding 15% last year, strongly favored by investments and evolution of Chinese Market.

 Special endeavor is aimed to Fiesta and Focus segments where 60% of global sales are concentrated. The idea is to create platforms able to build up more than 10 versions or models

through standardization of costly critical components and speed up Time to Market as major competitive advantage.

 ONE Ford expands on the company’s four-point business plan for achieving success globally. According to its Credo, “It encourages focus, teamwork and a single global approach, aligning

employee efforts toward a common definition of success and optimizing their collective strengths worldwide”.

The 3 elements of ONE Ford are:

ONE TEAM: ONE Ford emphasizes the importance of working together as one team to achieve automotive leadership, which is measured by the satisfaction of customers, employees and

other essential business partners, such as dealers, investors, suppliers, unions/councils and communities.

ONE PLAN: The company’s four-point plan consists of: balancing cost structure with revenue and market share; accelerating development of new vehicles that customers want and value;

financing the plan and rebuilding the balance sheet; and working together to leverage all resources around the world.

Key products in Ford’s global vehicle line up include: the 2010 F-150 manufactured in Dearborn, U.S.A.; the Ford Fiesta manufactured in Germany; the 2010 Ford Fusion Sport

Sustainability cannot be out of the plan. Ford’s environmental commitment is evident in both its product plan and its operational efficiencies.

In 2009, Ford’s fleetwide fuel economy improved nearly 20% during the prior five years, almost double its closest competitor. Ford will deliver 30 new powertrains during the next two years to increase fuel efficiency. With One Ford Prgram the Company intends to establish a Global Consciousness of Unity. Time will give us the response to the initiative´s success in this difficult sector juncture.

SPAIN, THE NEW “EUROPEAN INDIA” IN IT?

Spain is living a fact that is worthy of mention and study. While unfortunately, the Industry is suffering a process of investment dislocation, a significant number of large global companies have chosen Spain for the location of IT Shared Services Centers (i.e.Cemex, Holcim, Roche, Daimler Benz, Sanoffi Aventis …etc) where IT architecture models are designed to provide infrastructure, development and support services to various administrative and production Centers globally distributed. Also, the so-called Software Factories, most of which respond to a subcontracting deal by the Client companies in the areas of development, help desk and evolutionary information systems with global consulting firms in charged of managing all these services. Companies like IBM or Accenture where 40% of its 200,000 employees work in such centers, rule this business model, although other smaller companies also provide excellent services so that, gaining market share.
The area of action and influence of these centers located in Spain, both Corporate Shared Service centers and Software Factories are usually limited by the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East & Africa).
Thus, the geostrategic position of Spain with regard to territories around the Mediterranean on one side (from off-shore to Near-Shore) and the excellent quality standards of Spanish IT Professionals related to their costs on the other side, have allowed Spain to become in some way the “European India”. In other words, the ideal location to build and manage EMEA Near-Shoring Information Technology projects.
Not surprisingly, the costs in Spain account for 50% of those represented in the United Kingdom and the quality of Spanish computer professional efficiency and performance overcomes the European average. Moreover, Spain is at the head of Software Factories in number of Standard CMMI certified Centers, and Gartner has placed Spain among the top 20 countries in this activity.
Three regions: Madrid, Castilla y León (with its important Technology Center in Valladolid) and Andalusia host 60% of the more than 100 factories operating software in Spain today.

The growth of these development and support centers is highly significant, since this activity has grown at rates exceeding 20% over the past 5 years.
Far from being affected by the crisis, the need for companies to reduce IT management costs strongly favored the proliferation and growth of these centers of Off-Shoring. As example, a Spanish technology company Indra , employs more than 3,000 people in this activity.
These IT centers offer economies of scale through synergies in hardware and infrastructure investments (Data Centers and Networks) that allow them to share resources among multiple clients optimizing their financial performance. Thanks to improved Work Loan organization, IT professionals can better optimize their knowledge offering its service to various companies in parallel.
These centers are focused  depending on the target sector in some cases or on the type of technology or applications to which they support, in rest of cases.
However, this new industry is not protected from dangers or threats. On the one hand the delay that Spain continues to suffer in terms of language skills compared to competing countries (even in English) and on the other hand, the certainty that Spanish IT professionals have on increasing significantly their rewards and compensation north beyond the Pyrenees.
